What expiration date should I use on a new mover welcome gift?
The expiration date on your new mover welcome gift depends on your business.
For a pizza place, I usually suggest about two months.
For a dentist, it might be six months or a year.
People aren’t making those decisions on the same schedule.
They might be ready to try a pizza place this weekend.
Finding a dentist could come after they’ve unpacked, gotten their kids into school, and settled into their new routine.
Sometimes we use “Offer expires in 90 days” instead of printing a specific calendar date.
The timeframe and wording are things we talk through together.
What kind of business do you have?
What are you giving them?
And when are they likely to need it?
What if they come in after it expires?
I tell my businesses to accept it.
People sometimes bring in their welcome gift three, six, or nine months later.
That’s when they’re ready.
Moving is stressful.
They’re getting settled, figuring out their neighborhood, and finding the places that will become part of their lives.
Your certificate might bring them in this month.
It might bring them in several months from now.
You’ve already paid to get in front of that new mover.
You might as well let them enjoy your gift.
Then why put an expiration date on a welcome gift?
An expiration date gives people a sense of urgency.
And that’s what we want.
We want them to come in and meet you.
But if someone finally walks through your door after that date, welcome them.
Now they’re standing in front of you, ready to try your business.
That’s the opportunity you were hoping for.
The goal is for them to become a regular customer.
Not sure what to offer your new neighbors?
Tell me about your business and the customers you want to reach.
We’ll talk about a welcome gift that makes sense for you, how long to give people to use it, and how your staff can make that first visit count.
